Facu Pieres led Ayala to get the Gold Cup

Ayala Polo Team beat Indiana in the final by 13 to 8 and was proclaimed champion of the Gold Cup at Santa Maria Polo Club. The formation of the Philippine patron Iñigo Zóbel raises, ten years after his last consecration, the most important trophy of the 46th International Polo Tournament.
It was a deserved victory for a team that has played to a great level throughout the season, with an outstanding Facundo Pieres and today made clear their intentions from the first chukker. Ayala Polo Team achieved a quick advantage in the first chukker, (partial 3-0) that I knew to monetize throughout the whole game despite the continuous attacks of La Indiana.

The Indiana, the team of the American patron Michael Bickford, never lowered the arms, but the good collective game of Ayala and the brilliant performance of Facundo Pieres did not give him any option. Finally, Ayala took a deserved and much celebrated victory by 13 to 8. Iñigo Zobel (Ayala Polo Team) said after the match that “it is a very important title, especially for me, as I retire from the high handicap and I am very happy to have won the Gold Cup. Since 2007 we did not win it, we were in four finals and finally was given this year. The special thing about this consecration is that this is my last year playing the high handicap. Today the team responded in a big way, played as such, I think it was the key throughout the season, where we had a very outstanding performance winning two of the three trophies that came into play.

Facundo Pieres (Ayala Polo Team) said that “last year when Iñigo (Zobel) called me to play with him. He told me that he was going to play for two years and then he thought about withdrawing from the high handicap, and that he wanted to win the Gold Cup. We knew it was very important for him and logically for us, because it is a very important cup for any polo player”. “Today we played very well, we had a good game plan, we knew what we had to do. We started the match very plugged in and that was key to the concentration of the team and to not give the opponent the chance to get into the game. In some game of the season we relaxed, but today we knew that we had to keep the concentration from start to finish and that we did, “said Pieres.
